A jackshaft opener is a motor unit mounted on the wall beside your garage door, rather than on the ceiling. Instead of pulling the door with a chain or belt running overhead, it connects directly to the torsion bar - the horizontal shaft that the torsion springs wind around - and turns it to raise and lower the door.

If your garage currently has extension springs mounted along the upper tracks, you'd need a spring system conversion first.

Maintenance is fairly low compared to chain-drive systems, since there's no chain to lubricate or adjust.
